PHYSICAL EDUCATION JOURNAL (2004-2005)

  JOURNAL YEARS
2006-2007
2005-2006
2004-2005
5/4/05 Have recently finished the unit in Fitness with the 6th and 8th graders where they learned how to create their own workout program based on the FITT principle and the Five Components of Fitness.  It was a very successful unit where all students could participate to the maximum of their own level.  All students also had the opportunity to work on muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance, as muscular strength were not in the focus.  Body composition were addressed through the exercise of the cardiovascular system, muscular exercises, and stretching.

Kindergarten through second grade had the opportunity to improve and learn striking skill used in several leisure activities such as volleyball, martial arts, and eye hand coordination.  We also worked on the animal walks, which is a part of the warm up routine.

Third and fourth grade had a unit that I call Fitness Fun, which emphasized on muscular anatomy and how muscles create movement.  Through this unit the students could work on muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility.  They also had the opportunity to learn to recognize fatigue, as something positive as a result of physical activity, which encouraged the students to continue to work hard in class.

The kindergarten through 2nd grade thoroughly enjoyed the self & space unit, as they developed a better sense for general space and personal space.  The students really liked the Ball Walk game, which several students expressed to me.  I also noticed that they now have a much better understanding space, especially when they line up and suppose to have space in between.  We also discussed in class how to apply the space in games such as basketball, soccer, football, tennis, and many other sports.  I believe that this will carry over to other activities they participate in class and on their leisure time.

This is the first entry into the journal. I hope this will be a beginning where I can reflect as a teacher on what has happened each week in Physical Education.
